President's Updates ... (Past Updates)

Thursday 12th November 2015

Greetings fellow Toastmasters, Trojans and friends!!

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 18th November 2015. This meeting is on the THIRD Wednesday of the month because St Aidan's Hall is not available to us on the regular date this month. Meetings will resume on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month after this meeting.

Those of you who made it to our last meeting on the 11th November will agree we had another of our great evenings at Trojan Speakers!

Lourdes Barnes was our Toastmaster for the night. We had great speeches from Masood Ayoub, Robert Moores and Robert Morrison who was also voted Best Speaker for the night. Lorraine Cuffe was Table Topics Master and Dave Drew won Best Table Topics for the night.

The highlight of the night was a mini-workshop run by professional stage and screen actress Abi Eniola.

Abi is an accomplished professional actress which most of you might recognise from TV. Abi has starred in many popular shows such as Little Britain, Doctor Who, Casualty and The Bill. She also has been an executive coach and workshop leader for the past eighteen years.

Abi helped give us another perspective on how to be effective public speakers. She spoke about different techniques one can use to help focus one's energy and ultimately effectively engage with the audience to get the point across. My favourite tips were her breathing tips and tips to encourage more naturally flowing speech. Abi rounded off her speech with little exercises for all those present to practice some of what she was explaining.

All those present very much enjoyed Abi's speech and I would like to publicly thank Abi once again for very generously coming to share some of her tips with us at Trojan Speakers!

It was indeed a packed session last Thursday as after the break we had another special guest. This time it was Marion Shariff. Marion is a Toastmaster Revitalised Educational Programme Ambassador for our Area. In other words she is our "go to" person for information on the programme. Toastmasters is revising and updating their educational curriculum. As part of this revision we are likely to see new streams apart from just a Communications and Leadership stream. We are likely to also see some sort of online learning tools to compliment the educational manuals. The message at the moment is that changes are still being worked upon and there will a be a long transition period in which both old and new systems will run in parallel before the current system will be no more.

As highlighted above, our next meeting is on Wednesday 18th November. Kindly confirm your attendance by following the link or emailing our VP Education - Robert Morrison.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 18th November !! Please be there at 7:15 for a 7:30 start.

Thursday 15th October 2015

Greetings fellow Toastmasters, Trojans and friends!!

Our last meeting of the 14th October was yet another great evening with fantastic speeches and fun table topics.

Besides the educational value of Toastmasters meetings, practicing our communication and listening skills, we also get to hear and experience some amazing personal stories from our speakers. Yesterday's speeches were a case in point with a brilliant Ice-Breaker speech from Simon Vadgama. Simon gave a great speech with touching personal stories about his father. Simon won "Best Speaker" ribbon for the night - Well done Simon! We also had a great speech from Meena Hans who gave us some insight into the world of teachers and Alan Thomas who gave us a very personal touching account of his war time experience in South East London as a child. Jill Chang led a fun Table Topics session focusing on Technology in our lives.

Our next meeting on Wednesday 28th October 2015 is going to be bit different. Instead of a regular meeting we will be running a workshop by Harminder Dhillon entitled "Essentials of Public Speaking". This workshop is one of a series of quarterly workshops we run at our club delivered by some of our most experienced members. The workshop deals with improving delivery techniques. You will learn how to engage the audience, how to build suspense using simple techniques, how to create tension and excitement, how to add energy and passion in your delivery. It will be highly interactive, with something for everyone, even the more advanced speakers. The workshop is free and will run for 2 hours. It is certainly one not to miss. Please be there at 7:15 for a 7:30 start. The workshop will run for 2 hours. Kindly confirm your attendance by following the link or emailing our VP Education - Robert Morrison.
